Marvel Rivals Season 9 Brings Jubilee and Completely Reshapes the Battlefield
Marvel Rivals Season 9 is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious updates ever released for NetEase Games’ hero shooter. Titled The Mystery of Thebes, the new season places players at the center of a dark investigation involving the death of Apocalypse, a series of mysterious murders, and an enemy who may be hiding among the heroes themselves.
The update launches on July 10, 2026, at 9:00 UTC, with maintenance expected to last around two hours. Its biggest highlights include the arrival of Jubilee, a new map, a complete overhaul of the Team-Up system, a Black Widow rework, a Battle Pass featuring ten costumes, and balance changes that could completely redefine the competitive meta.
Jubilee Joins Marvel Rivals as the Newest Hero

The biggest star of Season 9 is Jubilee, one of the most recognizable mutants from the X-Men.
She joins the roster with her explosive plasma powers, which create colorful energy blasts that resemble fireworks. Although NetEase has not yet revealed every detail of her full ability kit in the general season notes, the developer promises that Jubilee will have the potential to make a major impact on the battlefield.
Her debut also includes new story content through the lore chapter Rise and Fall, alongside the Midnight Mutant and Cool Combustion costumes in the in-game store.
With her mobility, energetic personality, and visually striking powers, Jubilee has everything she needs to become one of the most popular heroes of the season.
The Mystery of Thebes Begins with the Death of Apocalypse
The story of Season 9 begins with one of the most shocking moments in Marvel Rivals so far.
While attempting to achieve cosmic ascension by absorbing the faith of the gods, Apocalypse is struck by a mysterious blade and killed. Following his death, the heroes travel to Thebes to investigate the crime, only to become trapped inside a Collapsed Timeline by an unknown energy barrier.
The situation becomes even more disturbing when three additional murders take place in rapid succession. One victim is found completely drained of blood, another is trapped inside an illusion resembling an ink painting, and a third is killed by a bullet that mysteriously disappears.
The most unsettling detail is that each death perfectly matches one of the wounds discovered on Apocalypse’s body.
Now, no one can trust anyone.
Death of Apocalypse Turns Players into Detectives
The Death of Apocalypse event will be one of the main activities in Season 9.
Available from July 10, the minigame places players in the role of investigators tasked with analyzing clues, identifying lies, and uncovering the identity of the person behind the murders in Thebes.
By completing the event missions, players can unlock rewards such as Units, Gallery Cards, and other special items.
The event offers a different experience from the traditional 6v6 battles, expanding the story of Marvel Rivals and turning the season into a full mystery thriller.
A New Map Takes the Battle to Thebes
NetEase has confirmed that Season 9 will introduce a new map connected to the events of The Mystery of Thebes.
The battlefield is expected to explore the area where Apocalypse carried out his cosmic ascension ritual, now heavily affected by distortions caused by the Collapsed Timeline.
Although the complete details of the map have not yet been revealed in the general update notes, the developer has presented it as one of the season’s biggest additions.
With a combination of ancient architecture, Apocalypse’s technology, and cosmic energy, Thebes has the potential to become one of the most visually impressive battlegrounds in Marvel Rivals.
The Team-Up System Has Been Completely Reworked
Season 9 does not only introduce new content. It also makes major changes to one of the game’s most important mechanics.
The Team-Up system has received a complete overhaul, featuring new cooperative abilities, unique effects, additional voice lines, and more dynamic interactions between heroes.
According to NetEase, the goal is to refresh team compositions and shake up the meta.
This means that combinations considered dominant in previous seasons may lose their position, while previously overlooked duos and trios could become highly competitive.
The changes also affect individual hero balance, since the developers had to reconsider the strength of each character when paired with their new Team-Up partners.
Regenerative Shields Are the Biggest New Combat Mechanic
Season 9 introduces a new health type called Regenerative Shields.
These shields work similarly to base health and are affected by percentage-based healing and damage. The main difference is that they begin to regenerate automatically after the hero avoids taking damage for five seconds.
Once regeneration begins, the entire recoverable shield amount is restored over the following five seconds.
The mechanic will be added to several heroes, including:
Captain America
Hulk
Angela
Venom
Black Panther
Black Cat
Magik
Regenerative Shields favor heroes who can enter combat, create pressure, and temporarily retreat to recover their defenses. As a result, the pace of team fights may become even more strategic.
Black Widow Receives a Full Rework
The Red Room assassin will also be one of the main highlights of the update.
Black Widow has received a significant rework, changing her abilities and overall gameplay loop. The goal is to make Natasha more effective, dynamic, and better aligned with the playstyle of a tactical combat specialist.
The rework could give the hero a new place in the meta, especially for players who felt that her previous kit struggled to compete with other Duelists.
Hulk, Doctor Strange, and Other Heroes Receive Major Changes
The Season 9 balance update affects almost the entire roster.
Hulk will have his base health reduced, but he will gain Regenerative Shields and increased damage on his basic attacks. His Ultimate will also require more energy.
Doctor Strange will receive more health and a significantly stronger shield, making the Sorcerer Supreme even more powerful on the frontline.
Devil Dinosaur will gain additional health and stronger critical damage reduction, while heroes such as Cyclops, Rogue, and other characters considered strong in the previous meta will also receive adjustments.
Ultimate energy generation is being reduced across the game. Vanguards and Duelists will generate less energy from damage, while Strategists will receive less energy from both healing and damage.
As a result, Ultimate abilities should appear less frequently, requiring stronger planning and better team coordination.
The Season 9 Battle Pass Includes Ten New Costumes

The Season 9 Battle Pass is inspired by En Sabah Nur’s Faith-Harvesting Engine.
The pass will include ten new costumes. Some of the officially highlighted skins are:
Deadpool – Dead Mummy
Elsa Bloodstone – Primal Predator
Rocket Raccoon – Golden Artificer
The remaining cosmetics are expected to follow the dark, mystical, and Egyptian-inspired theme of The Mystery of Thebes.
In addition to the Battle Pass, the store will receive new bundles for Rogue, Jubilee, and Wolverine, along with Ultimate visual effects and the Shogo Bag accessory.
Resurrection of the Horsemen Offers Free Rewards
Even after Apocalypse’s death, his Horsemen remain a major threat.
The Resurrection of the Horsemen event allows players to complete missions and earn Units, Chrono Tokens, Sprays, a Nameplate, and other rewards.
The activity is expected to serve as one of the main free progression events of the season, offering additional content for players who do not plan to purchase every store item or the Battle Pass.
Twitch Drops Include a Free Captain America Costume
Season 9 will also feature a new Twitch Drops campaign.
From July 10 to August 7, 2026, players can watch eligible streams to unlock the Captain America – Will of Galacta costume, along with other items from the same set.
To claim the rewards, players will need to connect their Marvel Rivals account to Twitch and watch participating channels during the campaign period.
Jubilee Receives an Exclusive Competitive Costume

Players who reach at least Gold rank during Season 9 will be able to earn the Jubilee – Crimson Crown costume for free.
The reward will be exclusive to Competitive mode and distributed to eligible players according to the season’s ranking requirements.
The release of a competitive skin for the new hero is likely to increase Jubilee’s popularity in ranked matches.
Marvel Rivals Championship Returns in Season 9
Season 9 will also mark the return of the Marvel Rivals Championship.
Teams participating in the open qualifiers will be able to earn Units and exclusive rewards. Their results will also continue to award Champion Points for the 2026 competitive season.
The best factions may advance toward the Ignite Series 2026 and compete for opportunities in the 2027 professional circuit.
Season 9 Could Completely Redefine the Marvel Rivals Meta
The Mystery of Thebes does not feel like just another Marvel Rivals season.
The arrival of Jubilee, the Team-Up overhaul, Regenerative Shields, Black Widow’s rework, and major adjustments across the roster could completely change how teams are built.
At the same time, the death of Apocalypse and the investigation in Thebes deliver a darker storyline filled with suspense, murder, and paranoia.
Between new powers, reworked alliances, and a killer hiding in the shadows, Marvel Rivals Season 9 leaves heroes and villains facing one dangerous question: who can they really trust?
